Every parent of a young athlete wants the best for their child. You want them to succeed, to feel the joy of victory, and to learn lessons that sports can teach about hard work and perseverance. However, sometimes, without meaning to, parents can add pressure that takes the fun and freedom out of the game. The best gift you can give your child is support, not control.

Your role is support, not control

Athletics should be a journey owned by the athlete, not by the parent. When kids feel like they’re playing to please someone else instead of themselves, they often lose their love for the game. Allow your child to set their goals and take pride in their progress. Ask them questions instead of giving all the answers: “What did you learn today?” or “How did you feel out there?” This shifts the focus from pleasing you to reflecting on their own growth.

Celebrate effort, not just outcomes.

Wins and medals will come and go, but effort, attitude, and character are lasting. When you praise hustle, teamwork, and courage, you teach your child that success is more than numbers on a scoreboard. A kid who hears, “I’m proud of how hard you worked out there,” instead of only, “Great job scoring,” learns that their value isn’t tied to stats... it’s tied to who they are becoming. That lesson stays with them long after the season ends.

Balance matters.

Sports can be an incredible teacher, but they shouldn’t take over your child’s identity. Athletes are also students, friends, siblings, and individuals with interests outside of competition. When kids are encouraged to have balance, they avoid burnout and carry a healthier mindset into their sport. Some of the strongest athletes are the ones who know when to rest, laugh, and just be kids.

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to raise a star athlete, it’s to raise a resilient, confident, well-rounded person. Sports are just one stage where that growth can happen. Parents who focus on encouragement instead of pressure give their children the freedom to fall in love with the game, push themselves to new levels, and carry life lessons that last far beyond their playing days.
